Nitrokey: the most-featured brand of an event that never happened
Over 67 days Nitrokey held the highest brand presence of any sponsor at our inaugural CISO.POKER night — and became the subject of a full flight across the CyberAdX network that is still running.
The Stack, scheduled for 5 August 2026 at The Wynn in Las Vegas, was cancelled 25 hours out. That failure was ours, and we said so publicly at the time. The campaign around it ran in full and is still running — which is what this case study is about.
The event failed. The campaign did not.
Nitrokey joined the prize coalition for “The Stack”, our first CISO.POKER night, alongside NovaCustom and PortSwigger. The event was cancelled 25 hours before it was due to start. That failure was ours — an anchor sponsorship that never landed, a venue arrangement that lived in phone calls rather than a signed contract, and a miscommunication discovered too late to fix.
What did not fail was everything built around it. The audience, the platform, the storefront and the media flight all ran in full, and most of it is still running. This is the record of what a sponsor actually received.
The deepest hardware contribution of any sponsor
Shipped from Germany, in hand before the cancellation, import duty paid — enough for every player at the final table and well beyond.
As of the 25 July prize-table promotion, Nitrokey held the final-table sponsorship, every mini-game including The Bubble, and second place (“The Pocket”) — the highest in-room brand presence of any sponsor.
| Item | Qty |
|---|---|
| NitroPhone 5a (final-table prize) | 1 |
| Nitrokey 3C | 10 |
| Nitrokey Passkey | 10 |
| Nitrokey Start | 10 |
| Nitrokey 3A | 7 |
| Total units | 38 |
The audience that was assembled
- ›61 registered security leaders — CISOs plus compliance, legal, AI and IR leadership — across 6 tables. Free entry, no badge scans, no pitches.
- ›Tables themed for the year-one mix, including a dedicated vendor table for field CISOs from MSSPs, keeping the vendor conversation in one place.
- ›38 applicants received a mid-cycle touchpoint email naming Nitrokey twice, with a dedicated mini-games line.
- ›The cancellation notice to all 61 named Nitrokey with the full shipped inventory and a direct link — sent at the moment of maximum goodwill.
- ›436 hand-written 1:1 LinkedIn messages, every one naming Nitrokey. 104 distinct organisations reached, 40 direct replies (9.2%), zero recipients below director level.
- ›Of 429 profiled recipients: 318 in the CISO/CSO/Security-Director band, 77 Group or Global CISOs, 34 privacy, compliance or legal chiefs. 56% outside the US across roughly 35 countries, with Germany the third-largest recipient country — worked deliberately for a German-made brand.
- ›8 site surfaces on the event platform, more than any other sponsor, including a dedicated brand page and machine-readable ai.txt / llms.txt attribution. The sponsor page drew 81 pageviews from 47 unique visitors — the most-visited of the three.
- ›The NFC chip run is printed and in hand: 9 double-size final-table chips, a 2.5×-size second-place chip, and 40 Nitrokey-purple sponsor chips, each resolving to a tracked landing page.
Outreach figures describe the seniority and spread of the audience reached. They do not imply endorsement, registration or attendance, and no individual or employer is named.
The part no cancellation touches
CyberAdX is our own first-party ad network across the security and privacy publications we operate — live network figures are published at cyberadx.network/stats. Nitrokey was one of its first privacy-hardware partners, tracked on its own affiliate reference from 12 July.
The flight did not stop with the event: placements ran 60 days past the event date, through 5 October 2026, accruing impressions and clicks at no further cost.
| Metric | Result | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Banner impressions | 30,479 | 1 July – 7 August |
| Tracked clicks | 605 | All carrying the partner affiliate reference |
| Sticky-anchor impressions | 19,405 | Premium placement |
| Sticky-anchor CTR | 3.08% | Best-converting affiliate creative on the network, climbing month over month |
| Editorial placements | 19 | Across 7 publications, every one carrying buy-direct links |
19 placements across 7 publications
Nine pieces were led by Nitrokey — the brand is the subject, not a mention. Ten more feature it alongside NovaCustom or the event. All remain live and continue to earn search traffic.
Podcast coverage
CISO Insights carried the campaign across four July episodes, including one built entirely around Nitrokey. All remain live in the feed and keep working after the event.
- ›Secure Your Data From the Silicon Up: The Nitrokey Ecosystem — dedicated episode, 17 July
- ›The Stack: Where Security Leadership Meets the Felt — the event episode
- ›From the Lincoln Highway to Vegas — the cross-country road-trip episode
- ›Hacker Summer Camp 2026: Villages, Badgelife and Vegas Survival — Vegas-week primer
Where to buy Nitrokey
We stood up an authorised US storefront for Nitrokey — US warehouse, two-day shipping, PO and net-30 available — because import friction was the main thing stopping US buyers from choosing German-made keys. It is live and continuing regardless of the event.
Buying through either link supports the network — we earn an affiliate commission at no extra cost to you, disclosed per our advertising policy.
Nitrokey backed a first-year event that never made it to the table, and did it generously — shipping hardware across a border on trust, weeks ahead of the date. The event is the part that failed. The 19-piece editorial library, the storefront and the network flight are the part that is still working, and they are what a sponsorship here actually buys.
